Government vs. Public Purchasing: Decline and Growth
By 2023, the number of government purchasing manager jobs will decrease predicts Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI). The Idaho-based data research firm released numbers that indicate a 3.49% decrease in the number of government purchasing manager positions in the next five years. Their predictions are based on data from 90+ sources and are pulled from state labor departments and federal agencies.
While Cara Christopher, EMSI’s marketing director-economic and workforce development, notes that they are unsure of the cause of the decline, she notes that it is a reflection of an overall decrease in federal jobs.
Fortunately, government purchasing managers need not fear about this decrease in jobs as the number of purchasing jobs are set to increase overall. So many of the positions dissolved in government purchasing will simply move to the public sector.
The need for public purchasing managers is already high with a shortage of qualified talent. As that demand grows, the position is going to become more and more valuable, but also more difficult to fill.
Harold (Hal) Good, former director of procurement and contracting in Frederick County Md., and Palm Springs, Calif., said, “Large purchasing organizations are seeking directors who are multi-disciplined, are flexible and are good negotiators. The directors need to be able to work well with other administrators, and be able to work collaboratively.”
